Making sense of body odour

Sweating is a necessary physiologic process for your body to control its temperature and balance fluids and electrolytes. On its own, sweat does not have any odour. Smells are only produced when evaporation is obstructed, leading to conditions that promote bacterial growth, which causes the unpleasant odours.

Smells vary with each person and they can be influenced by smoking, drinking, certain foods, and health disorders, such as those involving hormones, the skin or nervous system. Whether they’re used for routine personal hygiene or to help those trying to manage demanding body chemistries, antiperspirants and deodorants are effective at reducing the malodor.
