Is there a genetic or environmental basis for eczema?

Actually, both are influencing factors. Eczema is a genetic skin disease that arises from the interplay of multiple genes with environmental contributing factors. While you can't control your genetic predisposition, you can control some of the common triggering irritants that aggravate eczema. Patch testing that’s done by a dermatologist can help to identify some of the potential allergens that you may be sensitive to.

Some common triggers include household cleaning agents, drying soaps, detergents, and fragranced lotions. Any exposure to water has a drying effect on your skin, so be aware of the frequency and duration of contact. Wear gloves if your hands have to be in water for long periods of time, avoid long hot showers and opt for short warm baths. Select clothing made from cotton, and whenever possible, control your levels of perspiration and stress. Keep your skin moisturized to break the dry skin cycle that includes itching, scratching, inflammation and possible infection.
